Long before the resources and opportunity were present, Michelle N. Gibson was inspired by the belief in the importance of igniting elders’ vitality through movement. Movement Therapy For Seniors Initially developed in New Orleans with the assistance from a grant from the Council on Aging, this important work was originally called, “Voices Not Forgotten”, as Michelle N. Gibson sought to preserve the vitality of human beings in their later years. Movement is an essential ingredient to preserving this vitality, especially for those who might have limited mobility. Once she became a Dallas transplant following Hurricane Katrina, Michelle took her curriculum to senior living facilities, community centers, hospitals, and churches through a residency supported by the City of Dallas, Office of Cultural Affairs. Movement, music, and dance are used to support seniors’ awareness and sensibility of their body motor functions. Classes emphasize alignment with gravity, increasing ease and kinesthetic efficiency through both spontaneous and specific movement sequences. A variety of dance styles are used in class including basic Modern, Jazz, Cultural and Social Dance forms along with Aerobics. Modern and Jazz, Cultural, Aerobic, and Social dance form. |
